"Windows 10 S" Changes From New OS To Upgrade, Says Microsoft

11 March 2018

Starting with the next update to Windows 10, coming soon, customers can choose to buy a new Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro PC with S mode enabled, and commercial customers will be able to deploy Windows 10 Enterprise with S mode enabled. And always-enabled updates help you stay current on features and security for the supported lifetime of your device.Windows 10 gives you absolutely the best experience for doing what you do. Microsoft had positioned Windows 10 S, released just last May, as its "lightweight" operating system alternative to Google's Chrome OS.

Last year, Microsoft launched Windows 10 S, a new version of the Windows 10 operating system that's designed specifically for schools and businesses. Recall, it will replace the Windows 10 S and will offer the same functionality but without the need to reinstall the system. Microsoft seems intent on staying with the "Creators" theme for Windows 10, at this point. It is expected to debut alongside the Redstone 4 update in April. Next year 10 S will be a "mode" of existing versions, not a distinct version. SO. One of the largest gaps in app store coverage is the lack of choices for internet browsers; Windows 10 S users are pretty much stuck with the Edge browser bundled with the OS. Futuresource reported that Google's Chromebooks continue to dominate the US school market, with a 59.6 percent share in the fourth quarter of 2017, but added that Microsoft has seen growing adoption through its expanding lineup of lower-cost, education-focused Windows devices.

In Belfiore's official blog post, that rumor has been debunked: "If a customer does want to switch out of S mode, they will be able to do so at no charge, regardless of edition".

We're fairly certain that the majority of Windows 10 users still won't be satisfied with S Mode if it precludes the use of their favorite software. Users can now upgrade such devices to the full version of Windows 10 for a $50 fee.
