Huawei Technologies, China's largest smartphone supplier, is now offering an unlocked version of its flagship Mate 10 Pro model for pre-orders with a steep discount and some incentives to United States consumers, following the company's failed bid to establish distribution through a major American mobile network operator.
According to a new report from Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, Verizon was facing pressure from the USA government and it ultimately caved, canceling all plans for the Mate 10 Pro.
That said, Huawei smartphones will still work on both AT&T and Verizon, provided they are compatible with each network's requirements (GSM/ CDMA), but the two operators will not be directly offering the devices. The Mate 10 Pro is also a bit thinner (7.9mm compared to 8.2mm), narrower (74.5mm compared to 77.8mm) and taller (154.2mm compared to 150.5mm) than the Huawei Mate 10. That fell apart though at the last minute amidst pressure from USA lawmakers seeking to limit Huawei's participation in the US market on concern of Chinese government spying.
Following the setbacks, the Chinese company made a decision to sell the phone via retailers. Both Verizon and AT&T pulled out of deals when they should have carried the Mate 10 Pro in their stores. Slightly revising their schedules and plans announced at CES 2018, where the Mate 10 Pro was named the best smartphone, pre-orders are being accepted starting today through February 17th.

The new phone will set you back with a hefty $799, but Huawei is also throwing in a $150 gift card to sweeten the deal. In celebration of Valentine's Day, the Chinese company is bringing in the Mate 10 Pro Pink Gold. In terms of functionality, both the regular and Porsche version are nearly the same, but the latter is encased in glass and also expands up to 256 GB.
The Mate 10 Pro will start shipping on February 18th, during the weekend after Lunar New Year. You also have options for 128GB or 64GB SSD. Like any modern flagship device, it sports a USB Type-C port and ships with Android 8.0 Oreo baked in.
"Featuring the world's first AI-enhanced processor with a dedicated Neural Network Processing Unit (NPU) in a smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro achieves new breakthroughs in computing capacity to deliver up to 25 times better performance and up to 50 times greater energy efficiency for AI-related tasks", Huawei said in a press release.
Although it has not been the smoothest road to get to this point, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is finally available to US consumers via USA retailers. The Mate 10 Porsche Design model comes with a price tag of $1,225.
