Congress wins Rajasthan by-polls; Rahul lauds state unit

06 February 2018

Its leaders must realise that people had trusted the party by providing it a clear majority of its own in the Lok Sabha. He claimed that the victory of the Congress is the result of the outrage of people who were upset that the BJP didn't take the initiatives to ban Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Padmaavat.

In Mandal Garh of Bhilwara district, Congress candidate Vivek Dhakar defeated his nearest rival of Bhartiya Janta Party, Shakti Singh Hada by 12,976 votes.

The Congress is rapidly gaining ground in Rajasthan with its young turk Sachin Pilot in the driver's seat.

The outcome will have implications for the morale and internal power equations in both parties. The result of this by-poll has gained prominence in view of the Assembly elections that are due later this year, in about seven months. It even offers some signs for the 2019 general elections. Implementation is most important and therefore a mismatch between a feasible proposal and its logical conclusion can only lead to a loss of credibility of the government.

In this context, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's observation on the Union Budget is most revealing. This has helped her survive.

BJP tried every trick in the book to win the bypolls but nothing seems to have worked for the saffron party.

"The historical bypoll results have come as a boost for Congress". The party is starved of electoral wins and a sweep of this nature signals that the public sentiment is turning and the party machine is doing something right. The real beneficiary here has been the rebel Congress candidate. In Alwar, after 82 per cent of the vote count done with, Karan Singh Yadav of the Congress was leading by 144,914 votes. "Ajit Jogi may cut into the Congress vote, which will help the BJP", said the BJP functionary.

The Congress also won Ajmer, which is a personal triumph for Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot as he had represented the seat from 2009 to 2014.

In the high-voltage run-up to the by-polls, the Congress also accused the BJP of trying to polarize voters and doing nothing to stop attacks on Muslims in incidents mostly linked to cow vigilantes. Singh received 1,11,729 votes, while CPIM's Gargi Chaterjee secured 35,497 votes, BJP's Sandip Banerjee 38,711 votes and Congress's Goutam Bose 10,527, reported News18. This verdict will strengthen Pilot's hands. "The tide will turn in favour of the Congress in Maharashtra and other states as well", he said.

Of the 8 assembly segments in each of the Alwar and Ajmer Lok Sabha constituencies BJP legislators represent 14 - seven each. It should worry the BJP because this is an early sign that repeating its sw- eep of north and west India may not be possible. He added, "Since these elections for parliamentary seats were held after "notebandi" and GST, it is a mandate against the BJP government at Centre too". It is now held by BJP MLA Shatrughan Gautam.

An ecstatic Rahul Gandhi said he was proud of the team in Rajasthan.
