China Slams US 'Cold War Mentality' Amid Nuclear Policy Shift

"The United States would only consider the use of nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances to defend the vital interests of the United States, its allies and partners", according to the NPR.

Upgrading the United States arsenal and complementing massive "strategic" bombs with smaller "tactical" weapons was "aimed at making use of nuclear weapons less likely", President Donald Trump said in a statement.

The review of US nuclear policy is coming days after the director of the CIA Mike Pompeo revealed in an interview with the BBC that China is a "big threat" to the United States of America just as Russian Federation which has been fingered to have influenced the last presidential polls which brought Donald Trump to power.

Defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said in a statement that the United States should "correctly understand China's strategic intent and see China's national defence and military build-up in an objective way".

"That is why precisely we in Europe must begin new initiatives for arms control and disarmament".

The Pentagon document, known as the Nuclear Posture Review, also urged Beijing to establish "meaningful dialogue" with Washington.

Low-yield nuclear weapons, while still devastating, have a strength of less than 20 kilotons.

China's Defence Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said that the USA document presumptuously speculated about the intentions behind China's development and played up the threat of China's nuclear strength, reports PTI.

Russia's foreign minister called the move "confrontational" and expressed "deep disappointment". Bringing back sea-based nuclear missiles.

In a tweet published on Saturday, Zarif wrote, "The US Nuclear Posture Review reflects greater reliance on nukes in violation of the NPT, bringing humankind closer to annihilation".

"We hope the USA will discard its 'cold-war mentality, ' shoulder its own special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament, understand correctly China's strategic intentions and take a fair view on China's national defense and military development".

The Pentagon said last week that the planned tactical warhead for some ballistic missiles and the reintroduction of a nuclear-tipped cruise missile would help to deter a limited nuclear strike. Late past year it denounced Washington's updated defence strategy and urged the USA to abandon "outdated notions".

The Donald Trump administration said that it will continue to develop its nuclear arms policy and will adopt a stronger stance with Russian Federation, which it threatened with the high costs of launching a limited atomic attack on Europe.
