Moorhead native Borgen selected to US Olympic hockey team

02 January 2018

Brian Gionta, James Wisniewski, and World Juniors legend Troy Terry lead Team USA's men's hockey roster for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Terry, 20, is among four NCAA players selected to the team, and he will probably miss four DU games - a home-and-home series against Colorado College Feb. 16-17 and a two-game series at St. Cloud State Feb. 23-24. Still, the Olympic roster was announced during the second intermission of the 2018 Winter Classic between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres - a roster featuring former National Hockey League players, future National Hockey League players and everybody in between.

Team USA opens Olympic play at 2:40 a.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 11 against Finland, followed by a 7:10 a.m. game against Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and concludes round-robin play 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 against Canada.

Knight is fifth among US players for all-time Olympic assists with 10, followed by Lamoureux-Davidson with nine.

That left players from European pro teams, players out of contract or whose deals are only for the American Hockey League, and collegians.

Team USA won the first women's ice hockey Olympic gold medal ever awarded in 1998, and has reached the podium at each Games since, claiming silver in 2002, 2012 and 2014, and bronze in 2006, while Canada has won gold at each of those Games.

Madison native Amanda Kessel, who played collegiately at Minnesota, also is a part of the team for a second straight Olympics.

Ryan Zapolski, who plays for Jokerit in the Kontinental Hockey League, is the only goaltender on the roster so far, with two more to be added later in January.

"It's a tremendous feeling to represent team US at the Olympics".

There could have been 10 from UW in the Olympics, but forward Annie Pankowski, who has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, was cut from the USA team in December.

Borgen is now a junior defenseman at St. Cloud State. Olympic Team roster. Keller-the 2017 Hockey East Player of the Year-is as versatile as it gets.

Both will compete for the Americans at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, from February 9-25.

Gionta, 38, put up 588 points in 1,006 regular-season games over 15 N.H.L. seasons for the Devils, the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres.
