Cyclone Ockhi on way to Kerala, TN

The cyclone has so far claimed the lives of four people in Kerala. "Due to this heavy rains are expected in southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala", the IMD said in a statement. Shutters of the Neyyar dam, a major reservoir in Thiruvananthapuram district, were opened.

The state government declared a holiday for educational institutions for the day.

Indian Navy has dispatched three ships and two aircraft to locate six fishing boats and a Maritime Engineering vessel that went missing near Vizhinjam due to cyclonic conditions here.

The Met office advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala coasts and Lakshadweep Islands.

The Thiruvananthapuram-Trichy (22628) train have been cancelled between Thiruvananthapuram and Tirunelveli. Residents have also been asked to stay indoors with the Indian Meteorological Department predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has asked civic bodies to be ready for rescue operations. The advisory highlighted dangers in using the forest route to the hill shrine and resting under trees. Power lines were also disrupted in many places. The KSDMA alert will remain in force till December 2. Coast Guard's Helicopter was expected to operate from Alleppey by the early hours of Friday. Gandhi was scheduled to address a gathering at the Shankhumukham Beach here, at the culmination of Padayorukkam, a state-wide rally led by Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala.

The report said gale wind with speeds reaching 65-75 kmph and gusting to 85 kmph are likely along and off south Kerala over the next 48 hours and off south Tamil Nadu. Several districts including Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Kollam reported heavy rainfall and falling of trees resulting in disruption to traffic.
