Duterte welcomes Trump to Philippines

13 November 2017

Protesters shout slogans holding portraits of U.S. President Donald Trump and Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte during a rally near the U.S. Embassy in Manila, Nov. 10, 2017.

Hours after being sworn in as Philippine president, Duterte goes to a Manila slum and urges residents to kill drug-addled neighbours.

On Monday, the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Summits will be officiated by Duterte at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines before the leaders gather at the Philippine International Convention Centre for a series of meetings, including the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-US Dialogue Relations.

Mr Duterte said: "Let us investigate all violations of human rights committed by all governments".

Trump will meet Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila, where he will try to shore up relations strained by the mercurial Duterte's notorious anti-U.S. sentiment and his enthusiasm for better ties with Russian Federation and China.

Local and worldwide human rights groups claim thousands more have died as a result of the drug war's alleged extrajudicial killings, but the government has repeatedly denied this. Worldwide organizations, including the United Nations, have accused him of subverting justice and indiscriminate killing.

Leaders at the Philippines summit will discuss the South China Sea, but mainly to agree on a procedural step to cool tensions. "At the age of 16, I already killed someone".

But rights groups warn he may be orchestrating a crime against humanity.

But Trump and Duterte have expressed mutual admiration for other.

"I will slap her in front of you", he said, referring to Callamard by name.

Upon winning election past year, he implemented a drug war that has seen thousands of people killed, including children. Philippine police said a year ago that almost 6,000 people had been killed in the violence.

Since Duterte took office, police have reported killing 3,967 people in the crackdown. "Jeez. When I was a teenager, I was in and out of jail".

Trump is in Vietnam for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit as part of his 5-nation, 12-day Asia tour.

"A real person. During a rumble".

"Phelim Kine, HRWDuterte's spokesperson, Harry Roque, suggested the comments were "in jest". Duterte later said he regretted the comment, but the White House canceled the meeting between the two world leaders at the East Asia Summit in 2016 over the comment. I am a very good mediator, " the deal-making American leader told Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang during an official state visit.

"It's going to be very interesting because you have two individuals that are very much alike in their thinking, their language and demeanor, meeting for the first time", Roque said.

But Vietnam's trade surplus remains an irritant for the Trump administration.

"When I become president, I'll order the police and the military to find these people and kill them".

His final stop is the Philippines.

"Not extrajudicial killing. Well, he can not afford it".

"Forget what they say, those human rights (activists)".
