The Washington Post first reported Pence was hiring counsel. He has defended large corporations in Department of Justice investigations, and served as Virginia's attorney general in the late 1990s.
Pence's choice for outside counsel contrasts with the president's.
The vice president's office said Pence is committed to cooperating in the investigation, and he hired lawyer Richard Cullen so Pence could continue to focus on the administration's goals.
Vice President Al Gore also retained outside counsel in conjunction with an inquiry into his fundraising activities, including several telephone calls he made from his White House office soliciting Democratic campaign contributions.
Marc Kasowitz, the outside counsel hired by President Trump, does not have experience in politically-charged cases.
